Who we are

Wildlife Sense is a research & conservation organization based on the beautiful island of Kefalonia, Greece. Our mission is to protect endangered sea turtles and their natural habitats, offer a unique learning experience to the volunteers who join our efforts, and promote public awareness. To achieve our goals, we operate a science-based research and conservation project on the island, in collaboration with local and national authorities.

Sea Turtle Conservation

The primary goals are to protect sea turtle nests against damage and to monitor their progress throughout incubation to the hatching stage, while also monitoring the sea turtles inhabiting the local areas such as the harbours. Our survey teams walk along the beaches protecting newly laid nests and monitoring those that are currently incubating or hatching. Throughout the season we also monitor the harbours to observe and record information regarding the turtles’ foraging, social behaviours, and injuries or abnormalities.

Coastal Conservation

Our aim is to study the seagrass meadows and sand dunes along south-east Kefalonia. The coastal study areas will be mapped with a drone at regular intervals to locate seagrass meadows and to create both topographic and three-dimensional maps of the dunes, which will help study the ecosystem and track changes over time. Snorkeling teams will survey the nearshore area to collect geotagged photographs of the seagrass meadows, to identify species, the types of meadows, and their current state as well as changes over time.
