VOLUNTEERING WITH ANXIETY AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

If you are suffering from anxiety, are prone to be affected by a socially stressful environment, or suffer from a mental health issue, please consider the following before applying to volunteer at our project:

  • The study and protection of sea turtles are our top priority. Everyone participating is required to be able to focus and perform their tasks under all conditions. If you may become unable to participate, learn, follow instructions and take responsibilities effectively, it would put a strain on the project and may result in harm to sea turtles due to the team’s inability to protect them efficiently and in time.
  • We create the weekly shift schedule (rota) ahead of time, but often need to make last-minute changes.
  • All team members follow the schedule (rota) and are expected to be ready for shifts, prepare equipment, start on time, and follow all instructions, guides, and training.
  • Living conditions include shared rooms, bathrooms, and communal spaces.
  • Some shifts require waking up very early, staying up late, or spending the night with the team on the beach.
  • While on a shift, you may encounter tourists that have questions and are interested to learn more. In some cases, you may need to talk to people whose actions may be harming sea turtles due to lack of awareness. In those cases, it is important to be comfortable having a discussion or politely asking people to alter their behaviour.
  • Some shifts involve cycling on public roads in hot weather.
  • The weather in Kefalonia during the summer gets very hot and dry, and our accommodation is not equipped with air conditioning.
